Emergency procedures

 

Can initiate MOB recovery specific to type (CK)

Can initiate life raft launch when appropriate (C)

Can use harness appropriately where fitted (C)

Can use personal buoyancy appropriately where available

Can use VHF appropriately in an emergency

Can use a mobile ‘phone appropriately in an emergency

Can use pyrotechnics appropriately in an emergency

Is aware of fuel and gas hazards (C)

Is aware of stowage and appropriate use of fire extinguishers and fire blankets (C)

Can apply basic resuscitation techniques for hypothermia etc.

   

Local knowledge

 

Understands the buoyage and can name the marks between the Demi and Portelet

Understands the St.Helier pier head lights

   

Navigation

 

Can take plot a chart position using compass bearings

Can plot a GPS position on a chart

Can read and apply tide tables and the rule of twelfths

Can take appropriate action in case of fog (including sound signals C)

Can read charts and interpret chart symbols

Can read a compass and apply variation (and deviation C)

Can use GPS navigation between waypoints

   

Racing

 

Can interpret and apply a Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions

Can interpret and apply the Racing Rules of Sailing, Parts 1 and 2

Is aware of the implications of racing in close proximity with other boats

   

Right of way

 

Understands the rules and their limitations in practice for yachts in respect of:-

International regulations for preventing collisions at sea as applied to

Power and sail

Port and starboard

Overtaking and windward boat

Can apply the racing as over-ridden by international regulations

   

Sailboat handling

 

Can tie bowline, clove hitch, reef knot, rolling hitch, figure of eight,

Can tie round turn and two half hitches, and secure a rope to a cleat

Can rig the boat and name the parts of the sails

Can set trim gybe and recover a spinnaker or cruising chute

Can apply the proper use of jam cleats, stoppers and winches

Understands the effects of the different points of sailing

Understands the effects of true and apparent wind direction

Can tack the boat and get out of irons

Can run downwind with gybe awareness

Can fit a preventer if required (C)

Can execute a controlled gybe

Can paddle the boat in a straight line (K)

Can control the speed of the boat under sail

Can stop the boat an lie to under sail

Can sail the boat backwards under control

Can shorten sail appropriately when under way

Can get the boat back to its pontoon

Can position the boat on its cradle (K)

Can rig an emergency rudder

Understands upwind and downwind broach recovery (C)

   

Seamanship

 

Can set up a tow from the position of the boat being towed

Can stow items appropriately on board

Can operate a bilge bucket or bilge pump

Can anchor a boat on a transit

Can anticipate the effect of wind against tide

Can anticipate the effect of neap and spring tides

Can anticipate the effect of a lee shore

Understands and can apply the concept of course made good

Can row a dinghy around a triangular course, come alongside and make fast
